| Abstract | In ancient ages, chronic wounds were treated with empirical methods. In those times people used plant-based materials such as tree bark which has drying properties for wound dressing or washed the wounds with a herbal decoction. Nowadays, wound management is based on scientific research and experts’ recommendations, which allows to react effectively, when there is a risk of infection. Treatment of chronic wounds is a complexed process, which consists of humidity and temperature control, appropriate wound care and special medical dressing. Wound infection is a significant factor that intervenes with healing. The studies conducted my means of optic and electron microscopy revealed that 60% of samples collected during wound hygiene contained biofilm. Even when the wound is properly cleared, the biofilm quickly rebuilds. This makes the wound self-cleaning more difficult and reduces antibiotic penetration. The Biofilm Based Wound Care (BBWC) strategy is an effective method applied for treatment of chronic wounds caused by microorganisms forming the biofilm. This treatment method was used in the presented case. |
