| Abstract | Prevention of Postmenopausal Osteoporosis – Current Concepts. Osteoporosis is a wide-spread disease in postmenopausal women leading not only to individual chronic suffering, but also to an enormous socio-economic burden. Therefore, preventive strategies against osteoporosis are mandatory. Along with the recording of clinical and anamnestic risk factors densitometry of the lumbar spine and the femoral neck is necessary for the assessment of the individual osteoporosis risk. First, all non-pharmacological measures are to be taken into account, e.g. avoiding modifiable risk factors, ensuring well balanced, calcium-rich diet and regular physical activity. If bone mineral density falls below a certain threshold, pharmacological intervention should be considered. Besides calcium/ vitamin D supplementation an antiresorptive treatment using oral bisphosphonates (alendronate, risedronate) or the selective estrogen-receptor modulator raloxifene is first choice. Hormone replacement therapy remains to women with osteopenia who suffer from climacteric syndrome at the same time. J Menopause 2005; 12 (1): 14–21. |
