Abstract	This article addresses the questions how images of aging arise and which individual and social conditions may lead to them. In favor of that we analyze the theory of psychosocial development by Erik Erikson (1902-1994) on the one hand, under the aspect how age is conceptualized and on the other hand, how these concepts have changed within Erikson’s aging process. As a result, we identified four phases in the discussion of age in Erikson's work: praise of age, scolding of age, comfort of age and lamentation of age. Finally, we present Joan M. Erikson's concept of Gerotranscendance, which can be seen as a solution and detachment in age-related conflicts.
