| Abstract | The present study was conducted to evaluate the effect of inclusion levels of mesquite pod meal (MPM) replacing corn meal in the diet of lambs in feedlot finishing, on the performance and carcass characteristics of animals. A total of 30 1⁄2 Dorper x 1⁄2 Santa Inês ram lambs were used, with an average initial weight of 18.08 ± 1.87 kg and initial age between 4 and 6 months, distributed into CRD, four treatments, consisting of levels 0, 33, 66 and 100% (DM) inclusion of MPM, replacing corn meal, with six replications. After 15 days of adaptation, six animals were slaughtered for their carcass. The 24 remaining animals were housed in individual pens where they received complete diets containing 20% hay and 80% concentrate. After the experimental period of 56 days, the animals were slaughtered in a slaughterhouse. There was a quadratic effect (P<0.05) on the intake of all nutrients. An increased linear effect (P<0.05) was observed on the digestibility of DM, OM, CP, NDF and NFC. The final body weight of the animals, weight gain, average daily gain, feed conversion compared to the daily carcass gain, rib eye area and fat thickness were affected (P<0.05) by the replacement, showing a quadratic effect. The data indicated a decreasing linear effect (P<0.05) for weight neck, legs, palettes, loins, topside, hard cushion, duckling, rump, sirloin, muscle, bone and ratio flesh:bone of the animals. However, in relative percentage values, the effect of substitution was not observed. The replacement level of 33 % was compatible with the control diet, indicating that this level makes the replacement of corn bran with mesquite pod meal viable, without causing deleterious effect on the production of feedlot lambs. |
