| Abstract | Citizen participation has been pointed out as essential to the democratic life and its consolidation, as it favors the strengthening of social bonds, individual influence on collective decisions and the belonging feeling’s to the local community. Accompanying the indifferentism assumed by the majority of young people, indicator of an incipient civic culture linked to a historical deficit of participation and delayed implementation of educative measures at the juvenile civic education level, another preoccupation feature in our study is related with the fact that longitudinal studies demonstrate that behaviors and political young people attitudes are predictors of political participation as adults. Research suggests that to reverse the generalized disinterest about politics, scholar, familiar and associative contexts have a relevant developmental role. Departing from a developmental-ecological and constructivist conception we concentrate ourselves between the participation experiences and the psychological development of youth. Diverse researches had shown that young people life contexts (namely family and school) can potentiating active participation behaviors, if were given to young people opportunities considered fundamental to the promotion of developmental quality of juvenile participation – element mediator of influence of adolescents’ experiences in their psychological development. This study, using a quantitative methodology, involves a total of 1299 students from schools of 3 basic cycle and secondary schools from the region of Grande Porto, from the two genders, between 14 and 19 years old. The measure instruments used allowed us to analyze young people perceptions related to scholar and familiar contexts, developmental quality of participation experiences and the measures of cognitive, attitudinal and behavioral in political dimension from psychological development. Results show, in globally, that climate of familiar cohesion and very particularly the democratic climate of classroom have a significant influence, as contextual predictors, in nuclear dimensions of the psychological development; the measure of developmental quality of participation experiences exercise influence on cognitive, attitudinal and behavioral levels of juvenile psychological development of our study. In sum, from results achieved in studies accomplished, it was possible understand better the juvenile participation phenomenon in Portugal, critically reflecting about the implications in terms of future research and juvenile psychological intervention. |
