Environmental impacts of electricity production of micro wind turbines with vertical axis

| Abstract | This paper reports the Life Cycle Assessment of two micro vertical axis wind turbines – respectively with 1 and 3 kW nominal power. The aim was to evaluate the environmental impacts generated per unit of produced energy, comparing the two turbines between themselves and with the electricity produced by the national energy mix. The sensitivity of the impact results with respect to the wind characteristics variability, in terms of parameters as the mean wind speed and the variance of the mean wind speed, was also investigated. For the impact assessment two methods were selected: the CML-IA and Thermo-Ecological Cost in whole life cycle (TEC-LC). Results showed that the 3 kW turbine has in general lower values of the environmental impact indicators per unit of produced energy than the 1 kW turbine (generally 27-75% lower). This is mainly due to the non-linear amount of materials required for the construction phase and to the fact that the 3 kW turbine has higher capacity factors. The impacts per unit of produced energy are lower than the corresponding impacts for the electricity produced by the Italian energy mix for nine impact indicators out of twelve. Wind distribution parameters strongly influence the environmental impacts of the electricity produced by the considered turbines, leading to values higher than those obtained for the electricity produced by Italian energy mix for low wind average speed and, even more, for low variances of the average wind speed. |
