Abstract	Analisou-se a importância que tem a Matematica para o sucesso profissional no curso de Engenharia em Recursos Hidricos. Em correspondencia concebeu-se uma metodologia para realizar um estudo diagnostico na Escola Superior Politecnica do Bie, com o objectivo de identificar as maiores dificuldades na aquisicao das habilidades matematicas basicas dos estudantes do aludido curso ao iniciar o primeiro ano. Ofereceu-se evidencias objetivas palpaveis a favor da existencia de resultados historicamente insatisfatorios na referida aquisicao de habilidades. Finalmente, deram-se orientacoes gerais chaves para tratar sistemicamente os factores causais das dificuldades que se apresentam. DIAGNOSTIC OF MATHEMATICS BASIC SKILLS OF STUDENTS THAT ENTERING IN THE FIRST YEAR OF WATER RESOURCES ENGINEERING COURSE IN THE POLYTECHNIC HIGH SCHOOL OF BIE ABSTRACT Was analyzed the importance of Mathematics for professional success in the course of Water Resources Engineering. In correspondence was conceived a methodology to conduct a diagnostic study at the Polytechnic High School of Bie, in order to identify the main difficulties in the acquisition of basic math skills of students of the course alluded to start the first year. They were offered substantial objectives evidences for the existence of historically unsatisfactory results in that skill acquisition. Finally, they were given key guidelines for treating systemic causal factors of the difficulties that arise. KEYWORDS: diagnosis; mathematical basic skills; Water Resources Engineering.
