| Abstract | Error patterns in solving computational problems with fractions are well known. However, the question whether these patterns are consistent or not is still unanswered. This paper presents the design and results of an empirical study focussing on this question in the case of computational problems with fractions. It shows that a considerable part of error patterns and furthermore of approaches is not consistent. This implies that the concerning students do not have any strategies when dealing with computational problems. Instead, their solutions are not rationally chosen but emerge while treating the problem. |
