| Abstract | THE MODERNIZATION OF AGRICULTURE IN LATIN AMERICA Dur ing the last 20 years agr icul tura l p roduct ion has increased annual ly by 4 to 5%. Th is g rowth is ind icat ive of a « young » agr icu l ture, based on large capital investment f r om both private and commun i ty sources. M o d e m and high capital out lay agr icu l tura l enterprises are s i tuated in the north west of Mex ico , in Venezuela ( r ice near Calabazo), in Colombia (sugar in the Cauca Va l ley ) , in the north of Peru (sugar) , in the south of Brazi l , at Belize (c i t rus f ru i t s ) , in Paraguay (quebracho) . In the fu ture , agr icu l ture must face an increased demand in both qual i ty and quant i ty . This demand w i l l be better met by a developing agr icu l ture wh i ch a l lows a better in tegrat ion of product ion and a reduct ion of costs, and wh ich increases its product iv i ty . However, a too great and too sudden modernizat ion cou ld lead to unemployment and a low product iv i ty per acre compared to the high product iv i ty of f am i l y fa rms. It is, therefore, essential to develop a plan a imed at increasing the size of plots of land, at favour ing the entry of la t i fundia into the commerc ia l market and at developing food industr ies wh i ch wou ld in turn absorb the surplus of the rural labor fo rce . |
