| Abstract | Objective: to present a literature review about the use of botulinum toxin (BTX) in dentistry. Literature review: BTX is produced by an anaerobic bacterium called Clostridium botulinum and provides improvements in the quality of life of patients, since it can be applied in the treatment of chronic pain disorders, becoming effective in the treatment of bruxism, tension headache, gummy smile, temporomandibular disorders and drooling. After the normalization of the use of BTX in Brazil, it became routine in the dental office also with aesthetic purpose, to mitigate the folds and facial expression lines, as it promotes relaxation of the facial muscles, producing a less contracted expression. Final considerations: BTX has become a product of choice for the treatment of different disorders in the dental environment, although the dentist need to be aware of their safe action on the various anatomical structures involved. |
