| Abstract | In Palomas District, situated in Santana do Livramento (RS), the vine-growing has been practiced extensively since 1976. The Bordeaux mixture is the main defensive used to combat vines fungal disease. It is composed of slaked lime and copper sulfate, which contains other metals such as Zn, Pb, Cr, Cd and Ni. The long-term application of this compound may cause soil and groundwater contamination. Some characteristics of the studied area may increase this risk, such as sandy soils with high permeability, whose are generated from the alteration of sandstones from the Guará and Botucatu Formation and the fact of groundwater compose recharge zone of Aquifer Guarani System. The present study aim is to evaluate the metals and lead isotope transference in the plant – soil – groundwater system of Palomas` vineyards. The selected sampling areas were two vineyards with different ages and one area without agricultural activities. Soil, groundwater, leaves and roots of vine, slaked lime and copper sulfate samples were collected. The study was carried on through granulometric analyses, X-Ray Difraction, metal analysis by ICP-OES, multielemental chemical analyses by ICP-MS and lead isotope by TIMS. The granulometric analysis showed that the soils are sandy, but clayey levels are present and represent a geochemical barrier to contaminants migration. The multi-elemental results allowed the evaluation of some elements distribution in each geochemical compartment analyzed. In plant samples the metal contents are similar to those of literature, excepting copper, which showed high levels in the present work. This result reflects the elevated copper biodisponibility in sandy soils and the high frequency of Bordeaux mixture application. The soils also present high copper content, and this metal tends to be concentrated in surface horizons. High contents of arsenic were found in vineyards soils and in the slaked lime, suggesting that this element should be included in studies around the Bordeaux mixture. The groundwater didn`t contain relevant metal values, demonstrating that the contaminants migration in soil profile is restrict. The lead isotope showed similar values in vineyards and background soils, indicating that lead content of copper sulfate is not sufficient to change the isotopic characteristics of soil and groundwater. |
