| Abstract | This paper presents an interactive vision based rea l-time system for estimating light source positions and generatin g credible shadows for augmented reality. The implementation u ses ARToolkit as a basis for geometric tracking, and a reflective sphere for tracking light sources in the environmen t. The paper seeks to generate perceptually credible shadows. Us er te ting was conducted in order to determine the minimum criteri a for the credibility of the shadows. User testing showed tha t 64 shadows are sufficient and indistinguishable from more comp lex compositions and a real image. It was clear that us ers need a reference object to distinguish between real and vi rtual shadows. The implementation and performance are tested using a consumer-grade web-camera and a regular laptop comp uter. The implementation can perform real-time with 256 gener at d shadows. |
