Abstract	Os trabalhadores com o lixo, personagens cada vez mais presentes no cotidiano urbano, vem aos poucos sendo alvo de estudos academicos. Neste artigo pretendemos, partindo do cotidiano de interacoes que envolve o trabalho com o lixo em Santa Maria (Brasil– RS), abordar a construcao e negociacao de identidade dos trabalhadores com o lixo. O presente artigo, baseado em pesquisa etnografica, almeja descrever este processo interativo dialogando com quatro contextos: classe social, espaco urbano, politicas de protecao ao meio ambiente e economia solidaria. Para a elaboracao dessa reflexao partimos de pesquisa realizada com tres associacoes de trabalhadores com o lixo em Santa Maria-RS durante os anos de 2008 e 2009. O que se observou, por meio desta pesquisa, e a complexidade e multiplicidade de fatores envolvidos no trabalho com o lixo. Palavras-chave: trabalhadores com o lixo, meio ambiente, cidades, economia solidaria Abstract Workers with waste are becoming more and more present in daily urban life and they are slowly being targeted for academic studies. In this article we objective, based on the daily interactions that involve working with the trash in Santa Maria (RS/Brazil), analyze the construction and negotiation of identity with the garbage workers. This article, based on ethnographic research, attempts to describe this interactive process within four contexts: social class, urban space, policies to protect the environment and social economy. The article is derived from research conducted with three labor unions with trash in Santa Maria (RS) during the years 2008 and 2009. What was observed through this research is the complexity and multiplicity of factors involved in working with the trash. Keywords: garbage workers, environment, cities, solidarity economy
