Abstract	Although feeding wild animals is often described as an ecological disturbance, it has significant societal implications for humans. Therefore, in the present study, aspects of feeding were investigated from a sociological viewpoint. We conducted a questionnaire survey, and it showed that feeding captive wild animals has become popular in zoos in Japan and other countries in recent years. When feeding has contributed to the protection of wild population or become socially established, such as with Japanese cranes in Hokkaido or Japanese deer in Nara, these activities should not be completely forbidden for the sake of wildlife conservation. In the case of Japanese macaques, our study suggests that identification of harmful interactions with wild animals might be influenced by the particular relationships between humans and the wild animals they are feeding. Hence, decisions whether to continue wildlife feeding should be made based upon the specific relationships between the wild animals and human beings in question. 1.研究目的 かつて人が動物に餌を与えるのは、ごく当然 の行為とみなされてきた。小鳥の餌台を庭に設 置するのは動物の愛好家でなくても、ごく当た り前に行われてきたもので、餌付けは自然の行 為とされた。しかしこれが昂じてサルやシカ、 カラスに餌付けするとなるといわゆる獣害と結 びつけられ、その是非が問われ、また餌付けに より動物の《野生》が侵害されるという感覚的 な反発があるし、また生態系への介入・管理問 題とも関わる。しかし一方で、動物との触れ合 いという動機から動物への深い関係を求める伝 統的立場もあるし、また現実に野生生物保護に 貢献する場合もあり得る。本研究では、餌付け という行為への評価の複雑さを踏まえ、なぜ餌 付けが行われるのかについて、餌付けされる動 物を人間との関係性によって分析し、これから の人間社会と野生生物との関係を考察する基礎 となすことを目的とした。
