| Abstract | Community enterprise is a distinct category of entrepreneurship in which groups of individuals who perceive themselves to be part of a community take responsibility for identifying unmet community needs, and then organise the means of satisfying those needs. This type of entrepreneurship has an important role to play in the development of communities that are in some way disadvantaged, for example in terms of resources or location. The process of community enterprise tends to take the form of creating a project group, organised and managed by volunteers, who then create the community business venture that will generate the desired benefits for the community. This paper examines the social and economic benefits generated from community enterprise in two rural communities in north east Scotland. The paper is based on data gathered during 1999-2001 from four community economic development coordinators and multiple participants in six community businesses. The paper raises three important concerns in relation to rural community enterprise; namely, the nature of the benefits they generate, the recipients of these benefits, and the methods of evaluating the benefits created. In relation to the beneficiaries of community enterprise, interpretation of the data reveals that these are experienced at the level of the individual, the project group, the community and the region. This abstract briefly outlines the nature of community economic development, community enterprise and the methodology of the study. In the full paper, a thorough analysis of each project will be presented with field data evidence to illustrate the multiple recipients of social and economic benefits from rural community enterprise. |
