Industrializacao. Meio Ambiente. Risco. Trabalho. ABSTRACT This present article addresses the issue of dirty industry migration in Brazil, influenced mainly by globalization and the international division of labor. The study presented herein, using a qualitative and quantitative approach, focused on the tanning industry of the Rio dos Sinos Valley in Southern Brazil. One finds that, due to historical and cultural reasons, factors are still present that facilitate the conduction of industrial activities with a high pollution potential in this region. Public policies have invested (and continue to invest) in unbridled industrial development as a primary strategy for progress. On the other hand, the population reaps the benefits of this approach insofar as it addresses one of the banes of underdeveloped nations: unemployment. The overarching effect is a legitimation or democratization of environmental damage. Keywords: Globalization. Industrialization. Environment. Risk. Labor. |
