| Abstract | There were then very few people who appreciated the potential of CMOS. To do so, one needed to believe in the scaling rules. This was not hard if one knew what they were, since they were grounded in the laws of physics. However, it was also necessary to believe in the ability of the semiconductor process industry to achieve very high densities. This was harder, since VLSI had seemed very slow in coming and it might be equally slow in developing. In the event, things went like a bomb. Stories abounded of serious problems ahead, but the industry rode right over them. |
