| Abstract | In the present investigation, the concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), especially BTEX (benzene, toluene, xylene and ethylbenzene), were determined in six fuel service stations (EDS) of the city of Barranquilla. In addition, it was identified which process within the EDS contributes to the highest emission of BTEX. For the characterization of BTEX, data were taken in each EDS by means of the VOC measurement equipment, HAL-HVX501 during different days, both in the morning and in the afternoon, with a duration of 30 minutes for each sampling. Simultaneously, meteorological variables were recorded in each EDS using the Kestrel 4500 meter. The concentrations of BTEX obtained showed variations in each EDS evaluated, where the EDS 2 had the highest concentrations of BTEX, while the EDS 6 had the lowest concentrations. These results are compared with the values established by international organizations and regulations, where these concentrations exceeded the limits and can have an effect on the health of exposed workers. Additionally, it was identified that during the tanking process, greater BTEX emission is generated, understanding that, the greater the number of vehicles supplied, the greater the BTEX emission in the air. Finally, it was observed that the influence of the meteorological parameters was not significant, because the sample was taken very close to the source and thus had no influence on the behavior of the contaminants. |
