| Abstract | The aim of our study was analysis of the relationship between the degree of depression in adolescents and the level of markers of lead exposure – coproporphyrins (CP) and δ-aminolevulinic acid (DALA) level. Urine CP and DALA concentrations were measured by using a iodine and Ehrlich reagent respectively (Tomokumi and Ogata 1972). Our study has shown that majority of the individuals possessed a normal and acceptable lead level. We checked the level of depression in each group by Beck Depression Inventory (Beck et al. 1961) test. Women had higher levels of DALA and CP level compared with men. There were the vast majority of individuals with DALA level in the normal range (94.86%) among women, and only 5.14% was characterized by an acceptable level. Among male respondents, generally had an DALK within normal range. Our study showed a minimal levels of depression in both women and men, with lower value in males compared with a group of females. Half of the people was marked by low levels of depression in groups with normal range of lead and acceptable level of lead both in men and women. The highest percentage with minimum degree of depression (37.04%) among men group was observed. A small proportion of people with moderate depression in a group of women (4.22%) and men (7.41%) was recorded. In our study, there was no significant correlation between levels of depression and DALA level, as well as CP level in groups of young people with DALK level within the normal and acceptable level. |
