| Abstract | During the Renaissance, written polyphony constituted just a part of the repertoire normally performed by singers in Spanish cathedrals. Extempore or unwritten polyphonies, from simple fabordon formulas up to more complex techniques of imitative counterpoint, were usually employed not only according to the liturgical requirements or the typology of the plainchant, but also depending from the skills of singers of each chapel and the local traditions of each institution. This contribution is concerned with no-written polyphonies performed at Granada cathedral according to the Consueta, the normative document which describes the organization of liturgy in this institution. The praxis, typology and sonorities of improvised polyphonies performed at Granada cathedral will be studied comparing the information of the Consueta with other normative, theoretical, musical and literary sources of the age. |
