| Abstract | The purpose of this paper is to analyze and compare the characteristics of ‘platonic love’ in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby and Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights. It will also examine the influence of different socioeconomic situations and sexual differences on each artist’s creation of texts. The enduring platonic love in Wuthering Heights reflects Bronte’s emphasis both on physicality and spirituality, for the conflicts motivate much of the text. On the other hand, Gatsby’s excessively idealized and one-sided love in The Great Gatsby reveals the exclusion of physicality. Of particular emphasis is the idea of ‘physicality’, which is the most important key to understanding the loves depicted in these novels. The struggle against physicality and the repression of it are major themes of both texts which stem directly from the two authors’ aesthetics. |
