| Abstract | Pilot project for relative schools to older spouses to older stroke patients is a joint project between the College of Buskerud, Drammen Hospital and the Municipality of Drammen under the auspices of Geriatrics Lift Drammen. The project was inspired by studies and practice that indicated that elderly relatives have special needs for follow-up after their spouse being discharged to home after having had a stroke. Experience indicated that older relatives are particularly anxious to leave their spouse home alone. One idea was that 3 year nursing students could create safety by visiting the stroke survivors while relatives took part in the relative school, while students had the opportunity to study how stroke survivors experience their situation in their own home. Project experience suggests that relative schools that involve health professionals from both specialist and community care can encourage collaboration and create good transfer processes for elderly stroke survivors and spouses. Involving nursing students in the project proved to give depth knowledge about living after having had a stroke, a knowledge that may be very valuable to other patient groups. Students experienced it as interesting and stimulating to participate in college employee project. |
