| Abstract | The current study examines services directed toward supporting the caregivers of people with a mental disorder. The aims are to identify caregivers' perceptions of needs, to determine if the services provided meet these needs and to define ways to improve existing services. To accomplish this, a qualitative approach was used. The instrument used was a semi-structured questionnaire that has been administered to ten caregivers of people receiving services from the Institut universitaire en santé mentale de Québec. The results of the study point out that the participants' need for information is met with regard to services, the mental disorder and treatment. The emotional support needs from mental health professionals is also met. However, the current services partly meet the need to develop coping skills to deal with consequences of mental disorders for families as well as their need to collaborate with mental health professionals. In addition, their needs of being infonned on recovery process and for peer support are not fully satisfied. The current study highlights many aspects of services on which mental health professionals and administrators can act on caregivers' needs in order to assure adequate response. |
