| Abstract | Summary This paper proposes an analysis methodology for the optimal design of steel telecommunication and transmission towers using non-linear programming techniques. The methodology seeks to minimise the weight of the steel structure and to study the critical load associated to global stability of the tower, satisfying mechanical and geometric constraints. Usual constraints, such as displacements at the top section of the structure, stresses in the main legs of the steel telecommunication tower and member buckling are also included.
