| Abstract | Temperature IS one of the most Important factors for obtammg good furrugation results Especially in colder climates fumigation IS sometimes impossible due to the low temperature of the commodrties, Also the amount of pesticides used can be decreased sigmficantly m case the insect population IS brought to the optimum temperature level. Temperature modiftcations are easy to perform m laboratory condrtions, but in field situations there are still a lot of problems to be solved ThIS paper gives a bnef descnption of some case studies our company carried out WIth temperature modifrcations on a commercial scale. In a modern chocolate factory the production area was heated up to above 55°C ThIS resulted in a 100% mortality of the target msects in all stages, Without damage to the machmery. In a flower mill , WIth wooden mfrastructure, local regulations prohibited the use of methyl bromide. To aVOId excessive damage to the wood by heatmg, a combmation of heatmg up to 35°C and volatile msecticides was used A satisfactory killmg of adult msects and larvae was obtained, but eggs and pupae survived WIthout problems In many countnes stored products cannot be Iurrugated m wintertime, or fumigation penods become too long for bemg practical As an expenment stacks of bagged cocoa beans were heated up to 25°C and fumigated With methyl bromide. The results are the same as With a classical fumigatlOn m summertime. UntIl now It can be concluded that the use of heat can be a helpful tool m stored product pest control, but advanced techmques and eqUlpment, together With a welltrained staff are needed. |
