| Abstract | Background. Xantogranulomatous pyelonephritis is a rare, chronic and severe entity. Hand assisted laparoscopic nephrectomy is an effective and safe procedure. Objective. To demonstrate the surgical technique of a laparoscopic nephrectomy with the harmonic scalpel, the hand-assist device, and three ports, on a large xantogranulomatous kidney. We present the case description and literature review. Material and Material and Material and Material and Material and methods. We present the case of a female patient with xantogranulomatous pyelonephritis that underwent laparoscopic hand-assisted nephrectomy. Results. The procedure was uneventful and the patient had a favorable postoperative course with no complications. She was discharged 48 hrs after the procedure. Discussion.Laparoscopic hand-assisted nephrectomy is a safe and effective procedure. Xantogranuloma- tous pyelonephritis is associated with infection, obstruction and lithiasis. Conclusion. |
