| Abstract | The study carried out on three stations of waste water located north of Settat along the Boumoussa river and the underground waters of the water table (ten nearby wells) used by the riverside residents as domestic water, allowed the evaluation of the impact of waste water on the quality of the water table. The results of the analyses, which took place between April 2003 and August 2004, show chemical pollution of the underground water by the superficial flow of the Boumoussa river, whose waste waters percolate very slowly through Triassic layers. This is confirmed by the high content of chloride that exceed 1000 mg/l, which explains the conductivity values that reach 5000 μs/cm. However, a lithological influence on this aspect may not be excluded. The content in nitrates reaching 76,68 mg/l prove a nitric pollution of the studied underground water. A high organic richness is reflected by the high degree of BDO and CDO, that may reach 32 and 661 mg of O2/l respectively. The degree of contamination differs from one site to another according to the distance to the pollution source, the water table depth and according to the upkeep of wells and their surrounding environment. |
