| Abstract | This thesis intends to analyze Nietzsche's early works as contributions to the tradition of Bildung (education, edification, culture) – a German ideal of individual development. This Nietzschean contribution constitutes as much a continuation as a critique of this tradition, which we present in this thesis through the figures of Humboldt, Schiller and Hegel. Nietzsche shares with Humboldt an ideal of radically individual humanity and a conception of personal development as thoroughgoing expression of individual nature. Nietzsche also owes Schiller an ideal of complete and harmonious individuality running against the modern principle of division of labor, which is thought to confine man to narrow specialization. Nietzsche finally enters into conflict with the Hegelian conception of Bildung, which focuses on the education of man as future citizen and thinks the task of the school teacher as negation and repression of individual nature. *** |
