| Abstract | Imperata cylindrica (L.) Beauv. is a serious perennial grass weed in Southeast Asia ans is very difficult to control. On the other hand, this species is sometimes used as a mulching material3? and is empirically known to suppress weed growth. It makes dense stands and keeps the biomass of other species in the stand lows. This suppression seems to be caused by the allelopathic effect of I. cylindrica. Eussen and Soerjani2 reported that the water extract from leaves of this species inhibited the root growth of corn, sorghum, rice and tomato, and Eussen and Niemannl isolated growth inhibiting substances from the leaves and identified them as pand ocoumaric acid, gentisic acid, vanillic acid, benzonic acid, p-hydroxybenzonic acid, vanillin and p-hydroxybenzaldehyde. Allelopathy is believed to be important in agroecosystems6. In another study of ours, different weed species showed different reaction to water extract from buckwheat cultivated soils. There seems to be a species specific relationship between donor and receptor species. Allelopathy appears to have potential for selective weed control in the future and this would lead to decreased herbicide use in agroecosystems and be helpful for sustainable agriculture. From this viewpoint, clarification of the allelopathic effect of this species not only on crops but also on weeds is valuable. This study was conducted to determine the effect of leaves of I. cylindrica mixed with soil on weed emergence and growth. |
