| Abstract | In recent years cases of infections caused by vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) have become increasingly important due to their innate ability to store information and even transfer to other strains. They were isolated from intensive care units (ICU), urinary tract infections, bacteremia, endocarditis, etc. The two clinically important species are Enterococcus faecium and Enterococcus faecalis, which carry genes for resistance to vancomycin. The objective of this research was to analyze genetically the VRE strains from Guillermo Almenara Irigoyen National Hospital (HNGAI). In order to accomplish this objective, VRE strains were collected and molecular evaluation was performed at the Laboratorio de Microbiologia y Biotecnologia Molecular at the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos Lima. A total of 28 strains were selected, 82% (n = 23) corresponded to the species E. faecium and 18% (n = 5) E. faecalis. The level of resistance to vancomycin minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined by E-test; 23 strains of Enterococcus faecium obtained an MIC ≥ 256μg / mL; 5 strains of Enterococcus faecalis showed heteroresistance to vancomycin subpopulations within the inhibition zone. In order to determine the location of the resistance, Plasmids Curing test was used resulting that 96% (n = 22) strains of E. faecium resistance remained after curing and 100% of Enterococcus faecalis showed sensibility and transferability. The highest frequency of transference was 5 x10 for strain EC0507. By multiplex PCR assay, the presence of the only vanA genotype was determined in all strains Enterococcus faecium and Enterococcus faecalis. Thus we conclude that there is a single vanA genotype at the hospital environments of HNGAI and it would be transferable. |
