Abstract	This work analyzes the semantic-pragmatic behavior of the term "nao" and of expressions containing it in Brazilian Portuguese, seeking to describe the semantic uses and values of the term that, although not based on nega tion, play important roles in the process of oral communication, mainly when the social interact ions involve non-native speakers of Portuguese and demand an intercultural communicative competence.
