| Abstract | The degree in Field Education is a way to break the educational inequalities related to the subjects of the field, defending the right to education as a public and social good. This degree is marked by the defense of the training in areas of knowledge, among them the Natural Sciences, which is the discipline of Chemistry. Based on the assumption that the basic chemical concepts are fundamental for the development of the licenciandos during its academic course this work set out to identify the main difficulties presented by students of a group of Degree in Education of the Field of Sciences of the Nature of the Federal University of Piauí , as well as its relationship with teaching work in view of the need to implement new teaching methods. The study was carried out with 35 subjects from the fifth academic year of the course in question, who completed an elaborate crossword using an automatic crossword creation software, which contained statements about the concepts of atom, periodic table, chemical bonds, acids and Arrhenius bases, substances and mixtures, law of mass conservation and chemical and physical transformations, followed by a questionnaire containing two objective and one subjective questions. After the study, it was observed that the students did not find great difficulties in completing the proposed material, however, the low performance in some concepts was observed, which may be related to difficulties brought about in the Secondary School. When asking the students what the causes of such difficulties were, they pointed out the lack of practical classes, contextualization and interdisciplinarity, making evident the importance of the role of the teacher in relation to the need to work with new teaching methods so that students to identify with scientific knowledge and be able to apply it in their daily lives, being a challenge to be overcome. |
