| Abstract | This article introduces the educational system in Singapore by discussing its educational developments since its independence, its current educational system, its essential characteristics and the key challenges it faces in an age of globalisation. The first part delineates the three phases of educational development in Singapore: ‘survival-driven’, ‘efficiency-driven’, and ‘ability- driven’. The second and last part of the chapter describes the current educational system in Singapore, from pre-school education to university education. It also highlights three main features of the current system: an educational system that offers different types of schools and programmes, a curriculum that fosters personalized and inter-disciplinary study, and the changing role of teachers from just experts and dispensers of content knowledge to resource persons who facilitate the students’ learning through creative and student-centred activities. |
