| Abstract | CSCW and Groupware are nowadays two study fields observed with a renewed attention by a growing number of researchers coming from different disciplines. The complex processes and numerous implications involved within these two realms have not been analysed completely yet and still represent a challenge for those who attempt to design and implement effective and efficient systems. In this paper I try to describe the tools and the systems available at the moment, underlining advantages and drawbacks; then I address the social issues and group dynamics that computermediated collaboration systems imply, specifying the options that have been implemented and evaluated so far. Given this general framework, I outline an overview of the existing analytical perspectives within different disciplines, the research methods, assumptions and limits of certain approaches that often lead to the “failures” of CSCW applications. As many scholars agree, interdisciplinary collaboration is a good means to integrate consistently the paradigms proposed by the different schools and to provide flexible analytical frameworks suitable to interpret the “chaotic” realities of Groupware and CSCW. Finally I present two examples of successful system: Colab (an experimental meeting room to support face-to-face meetings that is still object of further improvements) and NAGA (an asynchronous computer conferencing system aimed at supporting collaboration among groups in a software design project). I argue that only through a correct interpretation and evaluation of the issues and bearing the previous experiences in mind, it is possible to give a relevant contribution to the collaborative work, making it easier, faster and more satisfying to the people involved. |
