Abstract	Este articulo tiene por objeto conocer las condiciones sanitarias de la ciudad de Veracruz al iniciar el siglo XIX. El periodo escogido ofrece un panorama confuso y dificil de estudiar pero a la vez interesante, con innumerables cambios econOmicos, polfticos y sociales que resultaron determinantes en la organizacion de la ciudad. Se analiza el papel desempenado por las distintas instancias involucradas en la prevencion y control de las enfermedades epidemiologicas en un intento por ofrecer algunas reflexiones sobre el tema en funcion del estudio de materiales primarios. Public Health in the City of Veracruz at the Beginning of the 19th Century The objective of this article is to understand sanitary conditions in the City of Veracruz at the outset of the 19th Century. The period chosen for the study presents a confusing panorama and which is both difficult but interesting to study, due to the endless economic, political, and social changes affecting the city's organisation. The roles played by various agencies and actors invloved in the prevention and control of epidemics are analysed, in an attempt to offer insights on the theme through the use of first-hand documentary sources.
