| Abstract | It is expected that network virtualization and programmable router hardware can significantly increase the flexibility in network operations centers. The on-demand provisioning of virtual network services to customers is an area which opens new business opportunities for physical infrastructure providers (PIP). In this talk we consider a scenario in which customers can lease a portion of a provider’s network to interconnect several points of presence, for instance company branch offices. We outline a framework which enables PIPs to instantiate a virtual router entity which can satisfy the customer’s demands, while taking network capacity constraints under consideration. We present algorithms to calculate the optimal mapping of virtual to physical network resources and aid operators of the physical network with network management. Additionally a live-migration strategy is described allowing virtual routers to be transparently repositioned within the network in order to meet changing PIP requirements. |
