| Abstract | This study examined the relationship between the occurrence of labor accidents in adolescence and the use of protective equipment. It was a quantitative study conducted in 2003 with 312 working adolescents enrolled in two state schools in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro. Data were collected by questionnaire and analyzed using EPI-INFO software. It was observed that 70.5% of the young people studied reported contributing to family income, supporting the family or being self- supporting. Many of them do not use safety equipment, specifically gloves, hats and shoes. Workplace accidents have been suffered by 97.1% of those who do not use helmets, 94.4% of those who do not use gloves and 96.9% of those who do not use safety shoes. It follows that there is a link between the occurrence of workplace accidents and non-use of protective equipment. This shows the working conditions of some young workers and the need for workplace education. Keywords: Work in adolescence; labor accident; safety equipment; health problem. |
