Abstract	The four hundred ninety^seventh meeting of the American Mathematical Society included a Symposium on Special Topics in Applied Mathematics and was held on Friday and Saturday, November 2728, 1953. The Symposium was sponsored jointly by the Society and the National Research Council, under a contract with the National Science Foundation. There was a total registration of 256, including the following 206 members of the Society:
