| Abstract | This article shows empirical evidence for the presence of the trade-off between economic activity and the risk that financial institutions are willing to incur in their activities. Through the use of panel data methodology for 66 Brazilian banking firms, it was observed that the adoption of riskier strategies in the market is associated with greater profitability. Furthermore, the empirical evidence denotes the existence of a positive relation between the output gap and the risk of banking firms.
