| Abstract | Development of libraries is closely linked to and depends on the development of its parent organization, the university. The expansion of university education and the establishment of universities to cater to the needs of those seeking higher education had a tremendous impact on the development and services provided by the libraries. The expansion of libraries under different time periods, Collection development, Staff structure & staff training, Library governance, and Automation of library operations since the inception of the University of Ceylon in 1942 are discussed.
