| Abstract | This article aims to address the design of services in the public sector and to off er an overview of the use of design at the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). Concepts such as services, public service, service design are initially clarifi ed. Then, the article draws a historical profi le of the implementation of design at IBGE, a public agency that currently has 19 designers in its permanent staff , hired through public competition. To conclude, it makes a diagnosis of the use of design by IBGE, on the basis of appropriate tools for this purpose, addressing the issue of the use of service design and prospects for the institution. |
