| Abstract | Despite the fact that epidemiological studies have been informing improvements in oral health situations all over the world, dental caries remain highly prevalent in most age groups. In Brazil, for the pre scholars, high indexes of caries are diagnosed with uneven distributions among populations and there is shortage of information, as well as subjacent and spatially demarcated causes referent to the disease. This study aimed at determining the prevalence and gravity of caries in pre scholars of PSF in the Sanitary Districts (DS) II and IV/Recife and to analyze risk factors. The design of the study was transversal with a case-control nested. Exams criteria followed standardizations of OMS/MS (World Health Organization/Ministry of Health) and the sample was probabilistic. Frequency distribution of dmf-t, average comparison, proportions and weighed factors for the representation of the samples were calculated. Children analyzed in the inquest were included in the case-control. A binary variable was adopted for the occurrence of caries and those individuals with ceo-d≥1 were considered case. For gravity, those with ceo-d≥4 were case. Raw OR and their IC 95% were calculated, with variables associated at the end with significance level p≤0, 20, in single varied analyzes, submitted to multi varied Logistic Regression Models with backward stepwise variable selection method and permanence criteria in model p≤0,10. The prevalence and mean dmf-t were at 18-36 months and 5 years. Respectively: DSII 31.1%, 1.15 e 63.3%, 3.65; DS IV 28.1%, 0.99 e 64.1%, 3.01. The reasons of prevalence did not show significant differences between DS and ages. Between micro regions, differences in prevalence and ceo-d occurred in DS IV. Common caries occurrence risk factors in both ages and caries gravity risk factors at 5 years old were: sweets intakes between meals and seeking health units for treatment. At 5 years were: low education of caretaker and living with more than 6 people. Risk factors related to time of residing in areas and residing in DS II, and other risk factors showed association with dmf-t ≥1 or ≥ 4 in ages of the study. It was concluded that the prevalence and gravity of the caries were high and bigger at 5 years. In spite of similar socioeconomic conditions between the areas, there are differentials that indicate social niches in worse living conditions. The risk factors that demand inter sector interventions prevailed. |
