Abstract	From issues raised by the art historian Alberto Cipiniuk about what he noticed as an uncertainty about the understanding and, consequently, the approach to the artistic phenomenon in the Brazilian academic context, it is intended to discuss the existing conflicts in art history between internalist and externalist, aesthetics and historical conceptions. As a consequence of the theme and in order to develop some questions, we bring to the center of the debate the thesis defended by the art historian Olga Hazan about the structuring role of the idea of progress in art history.
