Abstract	Universitas Sumatera Utara Introduction. Cigarette is the leading cause of death and each year 500 million death has been reported due to cigarette smoking. In every 6 seconds, a death is caused by cigarette. Cigarette contains more than 4000 chemical compounds, in which 40 of them are carcinogenic. More than 85% of lung cancer patients are smokers, and smoking has been linked to all kinds of cancer as well. Cardiovascular diseases and stroke can be caused by cigarette smoking. Methods. The aim of this research is to know the knowledge of medical school students of University of North Sumatera on the dangers of cigarette smoking. This is a descriptive research method with a Cross Sectional approach and the sample withdrawal is done by using consecutive sampling technique. Results. With a total sample of 112 respondents, the result shows that the majority of respondent’s knowledge on the dangers of cigarette smoking is good at 75,9%, average at 24,1% and poor at 0%. Discussion. From the results mentioned above, we can conclude that the medical students in University of North Sumatera have a good knowledge on the dangers of cigarette smoking. It is hoped that the Medical Faculty of University of North Sumatera will continue the good work and reinforce a rule whereby cigarette smoking will not be allowed at campus ground.
