| Abstract | The current scenario of energy crisis and global warming is driving a growing demand for alternative energy sources. The biogas generated in sewage treatment plants is one options that has been the target of many researches. When thought of the energy use of biogas, one of the most important components of biogas to analyze is the hydrogen sulfide (H2S). This work aims to analyze the values of concentration of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in the biogas generated in the wastewater treatment in UASB reactors, focusing on their energy use. The study was elaborated using data from six sewage treatment plants (STP). Data of the sewage flow; flow, temperature and pressure of the biogas; biogas composition (CH4, CO2, H2S and O2) and COD before and after the UASB were collected. The data were transmitted via telemetry every 5 minutes and were stored in a database. They were chosen for analysis periods that represented with accuracy the biogas behavior in each of the stations. It was analyzed the characteristic variation of the components, with focus on hydrogen sulfide, through the minimum, maximum and average values from each STP. It was possible to analyze their temporal variation. After that, it was suggested what type of treatment would satisfy the requirements for its use in internal combustion engines. Finally, it was calculated the power of the motor-generator for energy recovery in three STPs, comparing also the expected values and the measured ones of the biogas flow. The composition of the biogas measured is within the range found in literature, with methane values near the upper range, ranging from 76-83%. H2S ranged from a minimum of 185.18 ppm (ETE I) to a maximum of 3162.39 ppm (ETE J) and presented an average value close to 2000 ppm. Five of the six STPs presented a H2S with a temporally variable and periodic variation. The flow of the biogas measured were lower than estimated, resulting thereby in a lower power for the motor than the expected. The results reinforce the need for monitoring the biogas generated in the STP prior to the implementation of one of the utilization system. |
