| Abstract | The development of the State in modern India has a strong secular trend and, therefore, must contend with a fierce religious tradition. Also, in the last forty years in this country, a strong relationship of identity between the nation State and Hinduism has been consolidating that makes difficult such secularizing claim. In this article we take account of certain sociological features of Sai Baba groups, features that we distinguish as "reflexive" and "experiential" relationship with the sacred. We conclude that, far from being contradictory aspects, both aspects are dialectically complementary within the dynamics of the Sai Baba movement and that they are linked, among other factors, to the social processes experienced by contemporary India. |
