| Abstract | This paper examines the ideological issues of the Batalla campal de los perros contra los lobos, a fable written by Alonso de Palencia c. 1456. We will focus on those aspects critical of the highest ranks of the Castilian nobility, represented as animals, according to several scholars’ views. Beyond the importance of his work as an exercise in style, frequently underlined by other studies, we will emphasise its political discourse by means of lexical analysis. The identification and study of these discourses will enable the author’s thoughts about society, expressed in accordance with ideals of discipline, consensus and merit, to be examined. These ideals differ from the behaviour of some noblemen, so they would also reflect Palencia’s satirical intention. |
