| Abstract | Why should we be concerned with the inequality of happiness? The first answer is that happiness is valuable per se. Happiness may be regarded to be of ultimate value, and can be regarded as a measure of utility. Alternatively, happiness may be one of the various objects of value.1 Sen [5], despite his criticism of utility as a sole measure of well-being, notes that happiness is an object of value, and as such, it is part of people’s capability sets. The second answer is a more pragmatic one. For those who are not convinced that happiness has a value per se, the book provides many useful illustrations for the sort of novel questions which may be answered with the use of subjective data. The observation of stated preferences, for example, allows the test of neoclassical equilibrium concept, which may not be possible on the basis of observing behaviour, in other words, revealed preferences. For those who doubt the use of such subjective information, it offers a solid ground on issues of measurement and methodology. The book of Bernard Van Praag and Ada Ferre-i-Carbonell may be divided into three main parts. The first part (chapters 1–6) aims to answer the question: “What is life satisfaction?” Issues of measurement and methodology are presented with great rigour: Systematically discussing alternatives and the underlying assumptions. The relationship between domain satisfactions and general life satisfaction is explored, analysing the differences across population groups, and the varying relationship between objective circumstances and their subjective assessment.
