SUMMARY - Living in the Alps: Settlement as a mirror of romanization in mid-high altitude mountain areas - The middle and high mountain zones have been forsaken by researchers, but not by the historic societies that occupied them and engaged in different activities there. The activities that occurred in these areas were related to the exploitation of specific resources, with the possibility of remaining in place all year round or participating in seasonal activities. This is what has been demonstrated for the high mountain zone by research undertaken in the French Southern Alps. The numerous sites discovered here has made it possible to characterize the forms of temporary habitat from the prehistoric to modern periods. At subalpine altitudes the research undertaken in the Valais and in the Italian Alps has demonstrated the existence of habitat forms particular to the mid-altitude zones. The settlements and isolated establishments built out of dry stone and wood demonstrate an astonishing continuity in the methods of construction from the Iron Age through to the Early Middle Ages. In both cases, the study of the habitats demonstrates modes of exploitation and continuity whose origins can sometimes be traced back to the Bronze Age. The diversity of settlement and activity also reveals the outcome of Romanization in the Alps. |
