| Abstract | This essay argues that the tendency to read Edmund Burke’s view of the sublime from a Kantian perspective is misleading. Instead, it shows that Burke’s physiological approach, rather than associating the sublime with a Kantian autonomy of the subject, subordinates the individual subject in an attempt to reconcile the sublime experience with moral conduct. |
